A ROAD trip has helped Checkers return to the winner’s circle.
The flashy six-year-old grey ducked up the road to Rockhampton and got the job done in a Class 6 (1200m) on Friday, January 27.
It may have only been a small field of four, but Checkers still had the job ahead of him, starting the $7.50 outsider.
But despite the others being more fancied in betting, he came from the rear to storm past his rivals.
“It was a good win,” said trainer Stuart Kendrick.
“We sent him north to get his confidence back up and he was ridden perfectly by Justin Stanley,” he said.
“He came from last and finished over the top of them.”
It was Checkers’ sixth career win and fifth for the stable and connections since arriving from New Zealand.
