ERIC The Eels looks like he’ll just stay all day.

That was apparent after he stormed home to win a Class 3 Plate (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday, February 29.

Ridden by James Orman, Eric the Eel ($2.50-fav) was back throughout the run but chimed in at the right time and finished the race strongly.

“I have been saying to the guys all prep the further he goes the better he’s going to get,” said trainer Stuart Kendrick.

“He’s a real stayer, I think,” he said.

“I’m probably keen now to get him up over a bit further again.”

Kendrick said the tempo of the metropolitan race suited.

“They ran along, which allowed him to get home,” he said.

“In a lot of the races he’s been in they’ve walked or he’s had a little bit of trouble.”

Eric The Eel raced in blinkers and Kendrick suggested he’d probably keep the gear on as he stepped up in trip.

He said they’d put them on in a trial and the addition just helped the relaxed horse switch on when asked for an effort.

“I don’t think they’re going to make him pull.”
