TRAINER Stuart Kendrick and jockey Ben Thompson agree Pocket Full can be a bit of a “big dumbo”.
But that didn’t stop him striking with a good win in the last at the Toowoomba Cup metropolitan meeting on Saturday (September 23).
Ridden by new dad Thompson, Pocket Full ($2.60-fav) won a Benchmark 75 (1200m).
Kendrick believes there is further improvement in the horse as he is a bit of a “big dumbo”.
“He looks around at everything and he did again today,” Kendrick said.
“When he came to the turn he half came of the bit and I thought, here we go, but he knuckled down,” he said.
Kendrick said the win would make the drive back down the range to Caloundra a little easier.
“I think he’s only had one bad run in his life. He always tries,” he said.
“There are some nice races over the summer. It will be good to give him a bit of a freshen-up.”
Kendrick said he believed the horse, at his best, could measure up to some nice races.
“He’s consistent. He tries hard and, in the right race, he runs well.”
Thompson agreed with Kendrick’s assessment.
“You would swear he’s thinking about his tucker up the straight,” he said.
“He just does what he has to, but he’s a winner and that’s all he has to do.”
Thompson said the win was a good reward for Kendrick and his Caloundra team, as well as Archer Park.
“He’s been racing really well this horse, and it was a well-deserved win in Saturday grade,” he said.
“It was a good effort. There was good speed on.
“I was able to pop out three wide and he got a really good drag into the race.
“He enjoyed a bit of room and when I asked for an effort, he gave it.”
