SAVANNAH Gangster has staged a daylight robbery.
The Goodfella three-year-old broke through at career start number four when he ran down stablemate Papal Wars late at Doomben.
Ridden by apprentice Cody Collis, Savannah Gangster ($3.60) pinched the win in a Maiden Plate (2070m) on Wednesday (October 16).
The breakthrough, in which he beat Papal Wars ($3.20-fav) by just under a length, followed a fourth over the Eagle Farm mile last start earlier this month.
Trainer Stuart Kendrick said it was a good result for the “patient owners” of Savannah Gangster.
“He has been a work in progress but has really turned the corner over the last month,” he said.
“After a good run last start, he appreciated the step up in trip and was too strong over the 2000 metres.
“Papal Wars had to make an early run again and looked like he had pinched it on the turn, but just couldn’t hold on and ran a good second to give the stable the quinella.”
It was Papal Wars’ third second from his past four starts, so a win looks to be just around the corner.
