WHEN Just Precious broke her maiden status last start she nearly threw it away when she was slow away at the start.
But she did everything perfectly on Saturday to take the next step to a metro win.
It is extremely difficult for a horse to win the next start after breaking their maiden status, let alone when jumping up to metropolitan company.
But Just Precious ($2.50-fav), ridden by apprentice Cody Collis, showed she has an abundance of ability when she did just that, winning a QTIS 3YO (1200m) at Doomben by two lengths.
“She had a really nice run and finished it off nicely,” stable representative Bayley Kendrick said after the race.
“She went from doing everything wrong last start to doing everything right this start,” he said.
“It was great improvement.
“She was impressive. She got tightened up on the fence a little bit but kicked clear and was dominant in the end.
The progressive Justify filly has developed into a nice horse.
But Kendrick said that hadn’t always been the case.
“Early on she wasn’t. She was a cheap buy and had long, gangly legs,” he said.
“She was quite an ugly baby, but she’s turned into a nice horse. She’s matured up nicely.”
Collis said the filly had won her last run at the Sunshine Coast at career start number three impressively, despite being tardy at the start.
“I came into this race pretty confident today,” he said.
“She jumped and put herself there and I felt the winner a long way out.”
